Projects of formation of Salesians and educators take into account these three levels: (Cf. AGC 370, p. 22-25)

bullet

Basic general level:

-       study and practice of the Preventive System of Don Bosco as one of the best expressions of communication and as a basic reference for all formation.

-          The formation to various competencies in communication of the educator, beginning from his/her needs.

-          Preparation for working in a team and through cooperative learning.

-          A knowledge of and feeling for the languages in which youth culture is expressed....literature, theatre, music, cinema.

bullet

The level of animators and pastoral-educative workers:

-          The need to understand the culture of globalisation, and the ability to interact but also to be able to contribute to the creation of patterns alternative to the dominant capitalist culture (be cultural animators).

-          Interaction with the system of mass communication media, by ensuring the formation of persons who are creative and attentive to democratic use of the media for the benefit of all.

-          The development of a critical spirit with regard to mass media.

-          Competence in using the language and resources and instruments of Social Communication in educative and pastoral activities.

-          The formation of the ‘media educator’.

The level of specialist preparation.

-          specific technological and professional formation.

-          Mutual collaboration with centres of formation in Social Communication.

Salesians, taking into consideration:

bullet

Regulation 82: “Our Salesian mission orientates and characterizes at all levels the intellectual formation of the members in a way that is original and unique.  Therefore the program of studies must preserve a balance between serious and scientific reflection and the religious and apostolic dimensions of our way of life.  Those branches of study shall be cultivated with special care which deal with the education of and pastoral work for youth, catechesis and social communication”.

The sensitizing and preparation of confreres so that they can be able to insert themselves authoritatively into the communication field.

SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS as a department or team in a Province belongs to the wider provincial project.  It therefore relates closely to all sectors of life in the Province.

Youth ministry - SC belongs to this area.

Finance - quality communications cost money.

Salesian Family - including lay involvement in SC.

Missions - a communicative message in our own time.

Formation - SC as an area in the province needs to engage in formation activity; also needs to link closely with Formation sector.
